Rishi Sunak, born on 12 May 1980, stands as a prominent figure in British politics, currently holding the esteemed positions of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party since 2022. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first British Asian prime minister. Sunak’s political journey was preceded by his tenure in two significant cabinet roles under Boris Johnson, the most recent being Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022. Since 2015, he has dutifully represented the Richmond (Yorks) constituency as a Member of Parliament (MP).

Sunak’s origins trace back to Southampton, where he was born to parents of Indian descent who immigrated to Britain from East Africa in the 1960s. His educational background is equally impressive, having attended Winchester College before pursuing studies in philosophy, politics, and economics at Lincoln College, Oxford. Later, he furthered his academic pursuits by earning an MBA from Stanford University in California, where he excelled as a Fulbright Scholar. During his time at Oxford, Sunak delved into the realm of politics through an internship at Conservative Central Office, which marked his official entry into the Conservative Party. His professional journey began in the financial sector, first at Goldman Sachs and later as a partner at prestigious hedge fund firms, The Children’s Investment Fund Management and Theleme Partners.

Sunak’s political career took a significant turn in 2015 when he was elected to the House of Commons as the representative for Richmond in North Yorkshire. During his initial years as a backbencher, Sunak passionately supported the Brexit campaign during the 2016 European Union membership referendum. His dedication to the cause did not go unnoticed, and after the 2017 general election, he was appointed to a junior ministerial role in Theresa May’s government as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in a 2018 cabinet reshuffle. Sunak displayed his commitment to the Brexit cause by voting in favor of May’s Brexit withdrawal agreement multiple times, even though Parliament rejected it thrice, ultimately leading to May’s resignation.

The pivotal moment in Sunak’s political ascent came during the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election when he threw his support behind Boris Johnson, who emerged victorious and subsequently became the Conservative leader and Prime Minister. Recognizing Sunak’s abilities, Johnson appointed him as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in July 2019. Following the 2019 general election, Sunak’s role in the government was elevated as he assumed the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer in the 2020 cabinet reshuffle after the resignation of Sajid Javid.

Sunak’s tenure as Chancellor was marked by significant challenges, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent economic impact. He played a pivotal role in the government’s response to the crisis, overseeing key initiatives like the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. Additionally, he navigated the government’s response to the cost of living crisis and the UK energy supply crisis, demonstrating his adeptness in handling complex issues.

However, Sunak’s time as Chancellor came to an end in July 2022 amidst a government crisis that culminated in Boris Johnson’s resignation. Sunak, undeterred, decided to contest the Conservative Party leadership election that followed in July–September. Although he secured the majority of votes from Members of Parliament, he lost the final members’ vote to Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. Despite this setback, Sunak remained resilient and made a successful comeback in the October 2022 Conservative Party leadership election, becoming the unopposed choice as the Conservative leader and subsequently assuming the role of Prime Minister.

Taking office amidst a whirlwind of challenges, including the cost of living crisis, energy supply issues, and ongoing industrial disputes and strikes, Sunak wasted no time in asserting his leadership. He responded decisively to international crises, authorizing foreign aid and weapons shipments to Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion, showcasing his commitment to global stability and diplomacy.

In summary, Rishi Sunak’s journey from a promising young student to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is a testament to his determination, resilience, and political acumen. As he steers the country through turbulent times, his leadership continues to be shaped by his dedication to public service and his unwavering commitment to addressing the pressing issues of our time.
