Y. S. Sharmila
Yeduguri Sandinti Sharmila Reddy, popularly known as Y. S. Sharmila, is a prominent Indian politician and the current president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee. Born in 1974 into the influential Reddy political-business family to Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Vijayamma in Hyderabad, Sharmila has been actively involved in politics, making significant contributions to the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and subsequently launching her own political outfit, the YSR Telangana Party, before merging it with the Indian National Congress (INC) in 2024.
Early Political Career:
Sharmila’s political journey gained momentum in June 2012 when she took on the responsibility of campaigning for the YSRCP alongside her mother, Y. S. Vijayamma, in the absence of her elder brother, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. As the party convener, she played a crucial role in the by-elections, leading the YSRCP to victory with 15 out of 18 assembly seats and one parliamentary seat. In a notable demonstration of dedication, Sharmila embarked on a 3,000 km-walkathon covering 14 districts, starting in Idupulapaya in Kadapa district on October 18, 2012, and concluding in Ichchapuram on August 4, 2013.
Before the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, Sharmila conducted an 11-day bus Yatra, covering 1,553 km across Andhra Pradesh. The campaign, named “Praja Theerpu – Bye Bye Babu,” targeted the then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, symbolizing a political transition.
YSR Telangana Party:
In February 2021, Sharmila publicly announced political differences with her brother Jagan and expressed dissatisfaction with the YSRCP’s presence in Telangana. Subsequently, on April 9, 2021, she declared her intention to launch a new political party, the YSR Telangana Party, on July 8, 2021, coinciding with the birth date of her father, Rajasekhara Reddy.
Campaigning against the incumbent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government, Sharmila aimed to establish a political foothold in Telangana. However, in November 2023, she announced that her party would abstain from participating in the Telangana Legislative Assembly election, expressing support for the Congress party if they were to assume power. Merger with Indian National Congress:
On January 4, 2024, Sharmila merged the YSR Telangana Party with the Indian National Congress, symbolizing a strategic move towards strengthening the opposition against the ruling parties. Her decision to merge was officially announced in New Delhi, where she joined the INC in the presence of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi.

Sharmila’s personal life is rooted in the Reddy family’s political legacy. Born to Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Vijayamma, she has an elder brother, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, who currently serves as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Sharmila, married to Anil Kumar since 1995, is a mother of two.
