Amit Shah Boigraphy

Amit Anil Chandra Shah, born on 22 October 1964, is a prominent Indian politician currently holding the esteemed position of the 31st Minister of Home Affairs since 2019. Additionally, he serves as the 1st Minister of Co-operation of India since 2021. Shah’s political journey has been marked by significant milestones and contributions to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian politics as a whole.

Shah’s association with the BJP dates back to 1987 when he became a member, following his involvement with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), during his college years. His early political engagement set the stage for a remarkable career.

A key strategist within the BJP, Shah is renowned for his close alliance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This partnership has been instrumental in shaping the political landscape of India. Shah’s influence was evident in his tenure as a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, representing Naranpura from 2012 to 2017 and Sarkhej from 1997 to 2012. During this period, he held multiple portfolios, including Minister of State for Home, Law and Justice, Prison, Border Security, Civil Defence, Excise, Home Guards, Transport, Prohibition, Gram Rakshak Dal, Police Housing, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs in the Modi ministry from 2002 to 2012.

In 2014, Shah’s political acumen and organizational skills were put to the test when he served as the BJP’s in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, India’s largest and politically most crucial state, during the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP, along with its coalition National Democratic Alliance (NDA), achieved a historic victory, securing 73 out of 80 seats. This triumph catapulted Shah to national prominence, leading to his appointment as the party’s national president in July 2014.

Under Shah’s leadership, the BJP witnessed a series of successes in various state elections. In the initial years, the party emerged victorious in Legislative Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, and Assam. However, there were setbacks, notably in Delhi and Bihar in 2015. Despite challenges, Shah’s strategic approach played a pivotal role in the party’s victories in crucial states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Manipur in 2017.

The year 2018 presented a different scenario, with the BJP losing power in states such as Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. However, Shah’s resilience and political mastery came to the fore in the 2019 Indian general elections when the BJP secured an overwhelming victory, winning 303 seats and obtaining a majority. This triumph underscored Shah’s ability to galvanize support and lead the party to success on a national scale.

In addition to his role in state and national politics, Shah has a significant presence in the Indian Parliament. He was elected to the lower house, Lok Sabha, in the 2019 general elections from Gandhinagar. Prior to this, he served as a member of the upper house, Rajya Sabha, representing Gujarat from 2017 to 2019.

Furthermore, Shah’s influence extends beyond his political roles. He assumed the position of the 10th President of the BJP in 2014, holding this crucial role until 2020. Additionally, he served as the chairman of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from 2014, further solidifying his position as a key figure in Indian politics.

Amit Anil Chandra Shah’s remarkable journey from a dedicated youth leader to a stalwart in Indian politics is a testament to his vision, determination, and strategic prowess. His leadership continues to shape the BJP’s trajectory and significantly impact the nation’s political landscape.
