Temba Bavuma Boigraphy

Temba Bavuma, born on 17 May 1990, stands as a prominent figure in South African cricket, serving as the captain of the national team in Tests and ODI formats. He was also the captain in T20I cricket before transitioning into his current role as a right-handed opening batsman. Bavuma made history by becoming the first black African cricketer to score a Test century for South Africa and subsequently became the first black African to captain the side. His journey in cricket began in the vibrant cricket culture of Langa, where he grew up alongside fellow cricketers Thami Tsolekile and Malusi Siboto, all hailing from the same street.

Bavuma’s cricketing education took place at South African College Junior School in Newlands and later at St David’s Marist Inanda, a boys’ high school in Sandton. He made his debut in 2008 for Gauteng against Eastern Province, batting in the middle order.
